Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel
The effort and participation of citizens of Quintana Roo, primeraly of the island of Cozumel, enabled the creation of the Board of Trustees of “Laguna de Chankanaab” (Chankanaab Lagoon) in 1983, who’s objective was the rescue of the lagoon, guaranteeing the survival and development of marine species as well as flora and fauna.
Thanks to the administrative success of Chanknaaab on February 20th 1987, Lic. Pedro Joaquín Coldwell, governor of Quintana Roo, emitted a decree for the creation of the Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel, adding the Museo de la Isla (Island Museum) with the purpose to count with a space for rescue, promotion and education of the islands historical patrimony, sponsoring the reconstruction of what till its moment was Hotel Playa.
In the year 1994 de State Government gave the Archeological Zone San Gervasio to the Fundacion to administrate its services. Two years later in 1996, once decreed Zona Sujeta a Conservación Ecológica, Refugio Estatal de Flora y Fauna Laguna Colombia (known now as Punta Sur Eco State Lagoon or Punta Sur Eco Park) this was also given to the Fundacion to administrate.
